Oregon Profile

Farm to school efforts in Oregon are fairly new, with several school districts in the pilot stage, or initial stage of piecing together plans for implementation, but the state has already formalized its support for farm to school. The 2007 legislative session was a good one for farm to school initiatives in Oregon. Funding and support for a full time farm to school staff person within the Oregon Department of Agriculture was passed through HB 3307. A state-wide coalition actively supports farm to school initiatives and policy action, and includes the Oregon State Departments of Agriculture, Education, Human Services and Extension, food service directors, farmers, teachers, parents, school gardeners and community-based organizations.
