California Policies

California Nutrition Network for Healthy, Active Families and the California 5 a Day -- For Better Health Campaign
The following policy recommendations are based on the considerable work to date of the Network Policy Action Teams, Regional Collaboratives, Local Incentive Awardees, special projects, and the California 5 a Day Campaigns. On November 30, 2004, the Joint Steering Committee voted to identity their priority recommendations for promoting long-term environmental and policy change that will increase the access and availability of fruits and vegetables, physical activity and nutrition assistance programs for Food Stamp users and other low-income Californians.

Alisal Union School District Food Policy
The Alisal Union School District (AUSD) Governing Board recognizes that students need adequate nourishing food in order to grow and learn and to give a good foundation for their future physical well-being. The AUSD Board is committed to providing an environment in which students can learn to make healthful food choices for lifelong health. The Board recognizes that the food on our campuses is an important compliment to the nutritional responsibilities of parents and guardians. Today’s youth have poor dietary habits resulting in high percentages of obesity among AUSD students and approximately 25% of children in the Monterey County are overweight and face an increased risk of chronic diseases later in life such as asthma and diabetes as well as social stigma. Studies show that good nutrition increases student achievement. Studies suggest a connection between physical activity and increased levels of alertness, mental function and learning studies have shown that participating in garden, farm, and culinary activities increases students’ consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Davis Voters Tax Themselves for Farm to School Programs
Davis Joint Unified School District voters in California approved a parcel tax that includes $60,000 to $80,000 annually for fresh farm produce for school lunches. The district's board included the farm to school funding in the ballot measure after polls indicated voters' willingness to pay new taxes to improve school meals. Trustees have approved a memorandum of understanding with the Davis Farm to School Connection to work together toward a goal of purchasing 60 percent of produce served in the district from local growers. The parcel tax will provide a sustainable source of funding to help reach that goal.
