1. NFSN WEBINAR Trending Topics in Farm to School: Farm to School and National Agriculture in the Classroom

Food and agriculture education is a core element of farm to school and vital to developing a comprehensive and impactful farm to school programs. The National Agriculture in the Classroom Organization (NAITCO) and its member state programs provide K-12 teachers with educational resources and programs that use agricultural concepts to teach reading, writing, math, science, social studies and more. Join this National Farm to School Network (NFSN) webinar to hear from NAITCO about resources, information, and partnerships and learn from Healthy Communities of the Capital City, NFSN Core Partner in Maine, about how Agriculture in the Classroom partnerships have expanded farm to school initiatives in their state. 2. NFSN WEBINAR Farm to School Resource Roundup: Resources for Implementing State Farm to School Strategies

Responding to the rapid growth and interest in farm to school, the National Farm to School Network’s 2017-2019 Strategic Plan prioritizes building the capacity of its partners to advance farm to school at the state level through three complementary strategies: (1) state farm to school networks, (2) state farm to school positions at state agencies and university Extension offices, and (3) state farm to school policies. To support these efforts, the National Farm to School Network (NFSN) has developed an accompanying resource for each of the three strategies:

3. EQUITY Webinar: Land-grant institutions and food systems: Acknowledging historical disparities and exploring present-day equity initiatives
April 17 // 3 pm EST
Participants will learn what organizations and administrators who work with land-grant institutions across the country are currently doing to address inequities present since the inception of land-grant institutions. Topics will include the historical disparities between 1862, 1890, and 1994 institutions as well as current efforts to create a more equitable food system through food and agricultural programs for historically marginalized groups. 4. Week of the Young Child
April 8-12, 2019
The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration hosted by NAEYC to spotlight early learning, young children, their teachers, families, and communities. National Farm to School Network is celebrating WOYC on our blog by sharing the abundant opportunities of farm to ECE to support ECE providers in creating high-quality learning environments and aligning with NAEYC Program Standards. 5. Request for Proposals - 2019 Community Food Systems Conference
December 9-12, 2019 // Savannah, GA
New Entry Sustainable Farming Project and Georgia Farmers Market Association are currently welcoming proposals for workshop sessions at its 2019 Community Food Systems Conference, to be held Dec. 9-11, 2019 in Savannah, GA. Proposals will be accepted until April 15, 2019. They seek submissions from leaders in food security, social justice, and sustainable agriculture. This conference is a great opportunity to feature the role of farm to school in broader community food systems efforts!  Learn more here.

1. NFSN RESOURCE Organics in Farm to School
Many schools across the country are applying organic principles to the three core elements of farm to school - local food procurement, schools gardens, and food and agriculture education - in a number of ways. This new fact sheet  from the National Farm to School Network shares keys to success for integrating organics in farm to school practices and highlights three case studies of school districts finding success with organic practices. Explore this new resource here

2. Study: Identifying Indicators of Readiness and Capacity for Implementing Farm to School Interventions
The objective of this study was to identify and prioritize factors to inform tailored farm to school implementation by practitioners working in diverse contexts. Findings highlight a range of indicators of community readiness and capacity needed to support farm to school implementation. Results offer guidance for tailoring intervention delivery based on levels of community, school, practitioner, and organizational readiness and capacity. Read the study here

Policy Update
1. Senate Committee to hold child nutrition hearing
On Wednesday, April 10, the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry will hold a hearing in preparation for the next  Child Nutrition Act reauthorization (CNR). The “Perspectives on Child Nutrition Reauthorization" hearing begins at 10am ET and can be live streamed here. Check the National Farm to School Network blog for a recap of the hearing later this week.

1. Farm to State Coordinator, Hawaii Department of Agriculture (Honolulu, HI)
This position will serve as one of two primary liaisons between Hawaii's agricultural industry, State of Hawaii Department of Education, State Department of Public Safety, State of Hawaii Department of Health, State of Hawaii Procurement Office, community-based organizations, USDA, University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, and other stakeholders interested in increasing utilization of locally produced commodities in Hawaii educational and institutional markets. 2. FoodWIse State Program Manager, University of Wisconsin-Madison (Madison, WI)
The FoodWIse State Program Manager provides administrative leadership and oversight to program development, implementation, evaluation and reporting for the program. FoodWIse is a community-based nutrition program that seeks to empower individuals with limited incomes to make healthy choices to achieve healthy lives and reduce health disparities. FoodWIse is federally funded by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program-Education (SNAP-Ed) and Expanded Food and Nutrition Program (EFNEP) grants. Learn more and apply here.

3. AmeriCorps Farm to School Coordinator, Green Mountain Farm-to-School (Newport, VT)
The primary responsibilities of the AmeriCorps Farm-to-School Coordinator will be to develop, grow, present, and evaluate GMFTS’ Farm-to-School Programs. This is a full-time year-long AmeriCorps position. The Farm-to-School Coordinator reports to the Farm to School Program Manager. Learn more and apply here.

Cattle, Chicken, and Classrooms: The Ohio School Where Students Learn How to Farm
Olney Friends School, by virtue of their very own motto, “challenges students to grow.” This growth is both internal, and very, very literal: Olney high-schoolers take part in a multifaceted farming program on the school’s 350 acres of land near Barnesville, Ohio. (The Epoch Times)

Black beans go from farm to school cafeteria table in Iowa
All Cedar Rapids elementary schools served locally grown black beans Friday as part of lunch — a logistical feat for district administrators, a North English farmer and the nutrition workers tasked with encouraging students to eat legumes at least once a week. (The Gazette)

Louisiana pilot program incorporates gardening, nutrition into STEM curriculum
A partnership between the Food Bank of Central Louisiana and the Rapides Parish School Board is proving to be bountiful in knowledge and food for students involved in pilot programs at Mabel Brasher Elementary School and Phoenix Academic Magnet School. Staff members of the Food Bank’s Good Food Project sustainable gardening program have been teaching students at the two schools about gardening and nutrition. (Town Talk)
