Maryland Profile

Maryland ranks fifth in the nation for the amount of local food served in schools, with 21 percent of its school food budgets spent on Maryland-grown products, according to the USDA’s recently released Farm to School Census. Maryland school districts that bought local products in the 2011-2012 school year spent an estimated $41.2 million on school food, with $8.5 million of that directed locally. Maryland was one of the first states in the nation to have every public school system participate in Homegrown School Lunch, an element of the Maryland Farm to School Program. The Jane Lawton Farm to School Program, so named in honor of the late Maryland House of Delegates member Jane Lawton of Montgomery County, was signed into law by Gov. Martin O’Malley in May 2008. The state Dept. of Agriculture and Dept. of Education developed the program, which promotes the sale of nutritious locally grown farm products to Maryland schools; connects school systems and farmers; and established Maryland Homegrown School Lunch Week to promote Maryland agriculture through school meal and classroom programs and interaction between students and local farmers.
