Tennessee Profile

Tennessee's Farm to School Program is growing! The group is making strides to both increase the number of schools using local products in school meals and the number of opportunities to purchase local foods. Some of the activities that are on the horizon include, Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food training that will bring producers, distributors and buyers together to coordinate opportunities; producer training provided by the University of Tennessee that will enable producers to understand the safe food-handling expectations of school buyers; USDA Good Agricultural Practices cost-share funding; collaboration with the state Dept. of Health to target 13 communities with an emphasis on increasing fruit and vegetable consumption in schools and utilizing local foods as a preferred source; School Nutrition Program training targeted toward making local food procurement easier for the SNP supervisor; collaboration with school garden planners that will increase the likelihood of garden produce being used in school meals; and more! Stay tuned to hear more about what is happening in Tennessee.
