As the local food movement continues to grow, schools throughout New England are increasingly looking to expand the volume and variety of foods they are sourcing from producers in the region. This guide explores the emerging “sea to school” movement in which K-12 schools are sourcing locally and promoting seafood caught in regional waters. This guide explores why schools might choose to source local seafood, the different methods for purchasing local seafood, and innovative strategies for promoting local seafood to students.

This resource was developed by Stacey Purslow of New Hampshire Farm to School, Renee Page of Maine Farm to School Network, and Simca Horwitz of Massachusetts Farm to School through a 2016 Innovation Award from the National Farm to School Network, funded by Farm Credit and the Newman’s Own Foundation. Generous additional support was provided by the New Hampshire Department of Agriculture, Markets and Food, and New Hampshire Farm to School.
