-Bethel School District
Farm to School educational activities are being implemented in the Bethel School District in Eugene, Oregon. This program is a collaboration of the Willamette Farm and Food Coalition, School Garden Project of Lane County, Bethel School District Nutrition Services and Communities and Schools Together.
The main goals of the program are to educate children about where their food comes from, how to grow their own food, and the value of fresh fruits and vegetables in their diet. The program includes an introductory lesson focused on where their food comes from, farm field trips, tasting tables in the cafeteria, a harvest meal in which students prepare a meal using produce they harvested at the farm, garden sessions and nutrition lessons. We have also implemented a family outreach program increasing students and their families exposure and access to fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables.
Bethel School District Nutrition Services has also implemented a Harvest of the Week program during summer session and a Harvest of the Month program during the rest of the school year. Each month a different Oregon grown fruit or vegetable is highlighted on a poster and on the lunch menu and is served in all Bethel School District cafeterias one day each week. Most of the produce is purchased from farms in Lane County.
