Morris Farm to School Program

Morris Area Schools began a Farm to School program in Fall of 2007. In September they offered an apple tasting of two different apples- Harral Red and Sweet 16, purchased from Swenson Orchards in Montevideo, Minnesota. Two thirds of the students picked the sweeter, Sweet 16 apple as their favorite. These apples were offered as part of the school lunch menu through November. They will begin the fall purchasing local apples again in 2008 and serve them until they are no longer available. The program also did a Wild Rice Tasting and menued Wild Rice Pilaf. Rice was purchased from White Earth Reservation and will be offered again on the menu in 2008 in a soup. Foodservice managed this process smoothly, and it did not incur additional cost. There is interest to continue to expand in the next school year.
