-Hopi Elementary School Garden Project
Since 3 years the Hopi Elementary School in the Scottsdale Unified School District has a school garden for all its students. The children learn how to grow healthy veggies and herbs and why we all should eat lots of them. They use the produce from their gardens to make salads and other interesting dishes in their classrooms. During the garden classes we discuss how important it is to eat as local as possible and seasonal. Last year the nutrition department piloted a salad bar during lunch at the Hopi cafeteria with huge success. So far we don't have a direct purchasing relation with a local farmer, but know that some of the produced purchased by the district comes from local farms. This school year we will continue with our outdoor classroom and are planning to invite local farmers to our garden classes.
