Grants & Funding
1. Whole Kids Foundation Grants - School Garden, Beehive & Salad Bar
Deadline: October 15, 2019
Through their grant programs, the Whole Kids Foundation is fostering opportunities to connect kids to the root of their food. A school garden, salad bar or beehive can help spark a child’s curiosity and teach them to love fresh, nutritious, whole foods. Bring the joy of a garden or beehive to your school - applications start Sunday, September 1 and close Tuesday, October 15, 2019. 2. Clif Bar Family Foundation Small Grants
Deadline: October 1, 2019 
The Clif Bar Family Foundation awards small grants for projects focused on one of five priority areas, including creating a robust, healthy food system, increasing opportunities for outdoor activity, and building stronger communities - a great fit for school garden projects. These grants are awarded for general organizational support as well as funding for specific projects. Learn more and apply here.  

3. Budding Botanist Grant
Deadline: November 8, 2019
The Klorane Botanical Foundation is committed to supporting programs to teach respect for the environment and protect nature through the preservation of plant species and biodiversity. Designed to further their mission, the Budding Botanist Grant will help our youngest citizens learn about plants, explore their world and inspire them to take care of the life they discover in their local ecosystems. In early 2020, twelve grant packages will be awarded to schools across the United States. Three schools will be awarded a $2,250 package. Nine schools will be awarded a $1,250 package. 1. EQUITY Webinar: Food Sovereignty and the Role of Extension: Partnerships that Work
Monday, September 16 // 3 PM EST
Sponsored by Racial Equity in the Food System workgroup, this webinar will provide an introduction to food sovereignty, looking at how and why this principle is used in different First Nations communities. Following this introduction, two partners (one from the community and one from Extension) will describe how they have worked together on food sovereignty projects. They will describe how the partnership developed and key elements of a partnership that promotes food sovereignty. There will be time in the webinar for questions, comments, and suggestions of related resources. Register here

2. Webinar: Exploring Soils in the Garden
September 26 // 4:30 PM EST
Soils are alive with a variety of organisms that recycle nutrients, water, and gases. In this webinar presented by Veronica Justen, professor at UW-River Falls, we will discuss STEM lessons that we can harvest from the soil and demonstrate activities that allow students to explore the power of soils and the world beneath our feet. 3. NFSN WEBINAR Bring Farm to School to Life with Highbush Blueberries
Thursday, October 3 // 1-2 PM ET
October is National Farm to School Month, the perfect time to host a farm to school event to celebrate healthy, local food in the cafeteria, classroom and beyond! Resources like the Highbush Blueberry Farm to School Playbook can be a great tool for helping schools of any size find small and big ways to get kids excited about where their food comes from. On this webinar, three schools will share how they’ve used the Farm to School Playbook to put together successful nutrition celebrations with blueberries. Nutrition Consultant Dayle Hayes, MS, RD, will lead a panel discussion with three rockstar school nutrition professionals, who will share easy and practical inspiration for schools looking to kickstart their farm to school programs, tips for a successful promotion and increases in school breakfast/lunch participation, and inspiration for events your students will love. 4. NFSN EVENT Call for Proposals: 10th National Farm to Cafeteria Conference
Deadline: October 4, 2019
The 10th National Farm to Cafeteria Conference is coming to Albuquerque, NM, April 21-23, 2020! Hosted by the National Farm to School Network, this biennial event will convene nearly 1,000 diverse stakeholders working to source local food for institutional cafeterias and foster a culture of food and agricultural literacy across America. Do you have expertise to share? Conference organizers are seeking workshop and poster proposals from individuals and organizations working to improve our food system, strengthen community health, empower youth, advance equity and increase opportunities for farmers and food producers. 5. 2020 Urban Food Systems Symposium: Nourishing Cities in a Changing Climate Call for Abstracts 
Deadline: November 1, 2019 // 5 PM CST 
The symposium brings together researchers, not-for-profit administrators, community organizers, extension professionals, students, and others, to share and gain knowledge on urban food systems and agriculture and their role in global food security. Oral and poster presentations addressing research, education, and extension and/or community development programs around these topics and within the field of Urban Food Systems are encouraged to submit. Scholarships will be available for students and Extension educators thanks to sponsors and a generous grant from the North Central Region SARE. Learn more here

6. 2019 Western Youth Food Sovereignty Summit - Application Now Open
October 18-20, 2019 // Camp Verde, AZ
The 2019 Western Region Native Youth Food Sovereignty Summit is organized by Intertribal Agriculture Council and hosted by the Yavapai Apache Nation. At this summit, Native American youth will explore different areas of agriculture ranging from traditional foods to land stewardship techniques. This year's event is open to high school and college aged youth from the ages 13-22 living in Arizona and Utah. Participants must be enrolled in a federally or state-recognized tribe or be a tribal descendant. Apply here

Farm to School in the News
New York Farm to School lunch program builds community ties, improves food quality
This is the sixth year of the Broome-Tioga BOCES farm to school lunch program, an initiative to have more produce grown locally. Last year, more than thirty percent of all lunch purchases in the 15 BOCES school districts were New York products, to the tune of $1.5 million. BOCES staff say the benefits to this program go far beyond simply growing local produce. (WBNG)

Blueberries added to Alabama farm to school program 
“It was really great, and as soon as I told them I picked blueberries, to see their faces — they were like — what you picked blueberries? I said, yeah, they come off the bushes,” said Jane Haithcock, who teaches students in the eighth grade. “So it was really neat to see them make that connection that it doesn’t just show up here.” (Rocket City Now)

New Mexico arts program plants seeds for the next generation of local creatives 
"Food is art," Roseberry reminded the gathering, pointing out the "art" of historical acequia and farm traditions of Northern New Mexico. This year Growing Community Now will be serving 700 meals a day to Taos County school kids as a result of a USDA grant that allows six new area schools to be added to the organic food program.
