National Farm to School Network

Rhode Island

Rhode Island Profile

Farm Fresh Rhode Island is growing a local food system that values the environment, health and quality of life of Rhode Island farmers and eaters. The RI Farm to School Project contributes to this mission by encouraging RI school food purchasers to look to RI farmers first when seeking fresh foods. The program also offers engaging educational opportunities that teach school communities the environmental, economic and nutritional benefits of supporting local farmers. School food purchasers and RI farmers learn how to form sustainable purchasing relationships and chef technical assistance is provided to school food-service to help source and integrate fresh produce into school meals.

Farm Fresh RI works with students in the cafeteria, classroom and community to provide tastings, nutrition education and a tangible understanding of RI agriculture. These engaging experiences empower youth to think critically about the food they eat, to learn about how food is produced at nearby farms, and to taste for themselves that healthy, fresh foods can be super delicious.
