The Farm Food Collaborative (FFC) aims to help build a robust local food system that supports thriving family farms, a strong economy, and a healthy population. To this end, we work with the Alabama Department of Education and the Alabama Department of Agriculture & Industries (ADAI) to increase purchases of locally grown fruits and vegetables for statewide Farm to School via the Department of Defense Fruit and Vegetable Program (DoD Fresh). During school year 2016-2017, this partnership significantly expanded the amount of Alabama grown produce delivered to all 1500 public schools in the state, with priority given to schools with the most free and reduced lunches. In addition to coordinating delivery logistics as well as planting and harvesting schedules on the farm, FFC staff provides technical assistance to farmers as they prepare for Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certification, a requirement for participation in statewide and local Farm to School and Farm to ECE programs. Please contact us if interested in contributing to this important effort to bring more local fruits and vegetables to Alabama students and to support the farms and farmers who work hard every day to feed us well.
