Trainings & Cohorts

Learning opportunities with National Farm to School Network

As part of our work to advance the farm to school movement, National Farm to School Network regularly offers learning, relationship-building, and professional development opportunities for folks to engage with us and each other on a deeper level.

These opportunities include trainings, learning cohorts, and communities of practice that facilitate our vision for vibrant local food systems in unique ways, by supporting those who engage in the day-to-day work of farm to school and ECE.

Below are some of NFSN’s current projects that offer training and professional development opportunities.

National Farm to School Procurement Community of Practice

The National Farm to School Procurement Community of Practice (CoP) is a two-year learning network for state agency officials and statewide technical assistance providers seeking practical, system-level ways to strengthen local food purchasing in schools. The CoP examines innovative programs and strategies that have largely been developed within the last five years, including technical assistance models, product development, statewide solicitations, and approaches to leveraging existing funds and USDA programs. Many of these models remain largely undocumented, making the CoP a perfect space for innovation exchange through peer learning and candid conversations among practitioners.

This CoP will focus on strategies that do not require large ongoing investments, an increasingly urgent priority as temporary federal funding winds down. Our format pairs public storytelling with a closed learning community where participants can engage directly with program innovators and explore behind-the-scenes implementation details. This project is co-facilitated by NFSN, Cornell Cooperative Extension Harvest New York, and the Michigan State University Center for Regional Food Systems to support states in translating promising ideas into durable local procurement systems.

Farm to School Coordinators Community of Practice

Over the years of interacting with our Partners and school districts, we saw that one of the key factors that determines the success and expansion of a farm to school program is the presence of a dedicated farm to school coordinator position. In 2023, we piloted our Farm to School Coordinators Project, with the ultimate goal to scale up farm to school implementation nationwide. The collective impact of our first cohorts was far-reaching—together, the cohort members represented 21 school districts and 433,950 students across the country.

Now for 2026, we are excited to announce two new opportunities, with support from the Builders Vision Philanthropy: the Farm to School Coordinator Community of Practice and the Farm to School Coordinator Learning Collaborative.

We are currently recruiting 15 Farm to School Coordinators based in California, Michigan, Minnesota, or New York to join the Collaborative. Learn more and apply by February 9, 2026.
