Farm to School Coordinators Community of Practice

Strengthening capacity for farm to school programs nationwide

With the support from Builders Vision Philanthropy, National Farm to School Network is expanding the vision and networking capacity for the Farm to School Coordinator Community of Practice and will additionally implement a Learning Collaborative alongside four states: California, Michigan, Minnesota, and New York.

A Strategy to Scale Up Farm to School Implementation

Over the years of interacting with Partners and school districts, National Farm to School Network’s research demonstrated that one of the key factors that determines the success and expansion of a farm to school program is the presence of a dedicated farm to school coordinator position.

In 2023, NFSN received the Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grant and piloted a Community of Practice for Farm to School Coordinators. In this first phase, NFSN established two cohorts to provide unique professional development opportunities, support school communities, and develop resources to help build the case for the farm to school coordinator position. As part of this phase, we also partnered with the Colorado State University Institute of Research in the Social Sciences to develop research-backed tools to help advocates implement and strengthen farm to school coordination in their communities.

New Opportunities for 2026 and Beyond

Now for 2026, we are excited to announce two new opportunities, with support from the Builders Vision Philanthropy

Farm to School Coordinator Community of Practice:
This year, NFSN will be expanding the Farm to School Coordinator Community of Practice to open it up for more coordinators from across the country and invite them to attend free quarterly CoP meetings and to engage and connect with peers through a central virtual forum.

Farm to School Coordinator Learning Collaborative:
This cohort of 15 coordinators and supporters from California, Michigan, Minnesota, or New York will be working closely with NFSN staff and two peer mentors to deepen their knowledge and leadership in two key areas:

  • Local procurement and farm to school innovation, including strategies for strengthening connections between schools and farmers.
  • Facilitation and presentation skills, preparing coordinators to share best practices, lead asset-based conversations, and amplify the impact of their work within the wider farm to school movement.
